Online Social Networks: Imaginary Friends or Real Community?
I’m leading a workshop for a Presbytery event about Online Social Networks. Here is my oh-so-clever workshop description:
People are using social networks (like Facebook and Twitter) to connect, share, inspire, and inform. Social networks are woven into the daily lives of millions of people. Jesus went to where the people were, and so should we. In this workshop we will explore what it means to be a Christian and a church in a Web 2.0 society.
Here are links talked about in the workshop as well as a few more that are helpful.
- A Vision of Students Today
- Twitter in Plain English
- Goodreads (for book-lovers)
- Yelp (local reviews of businesses)
- last.fm (music)

Shawn,
I found your blog via your “How I WOW” podcast. Talk about Social Networking! :-) I am finishing seminary in Fort Worth, about to start my first pastorate (Southern Baptist Convention), and love to WOW. How about a site or podcast for ministers who WOW, or game in general. I am sure you need something else to do. :-)
I think social networking sites will be even more integrated into churches like the way email has become integrate over the past 10 years. Even small rural churches often communicate with members via email as much if not more than phone or snail mail. Even websites and blogs have become as common as TV broadcasting in the 80’s. Anywho I appreciate your podcasts and would love to corespnd about minsitry and WOW. Have a great week.
